Discover the Magic of El Tunco: Surf, Gastronomy and Adventure. 

Welcome to El Tunco, just 42 km from San Salvador and part of the Ruta Sol y Playa of El Salvador. A tourist destination, appreciated by both locals and international visitors, which stands out especially as one of the best places to practice the exciting sport of surfing. 

Geological curiosity and Elite Surfing

The name "El Tunco" comes from a black rock formation in the shape of a pig that adorns its shores. In addition to its geological peculiarity, the beach is distinguished by its black-colored sand.  


Along the coast, enjoy chalets surround the mouth of a small river offering services designed for tourists and surfers. Evenings are filled with bonfires and an unforgettable bohemian touch under the starlight. 

Vibrant Gastronomy and Ambiance

Nearby restaurants and bars offer local and foreign delicacies, as well as fresh seafood. On weekends, live music adds a festive atmosphere that complements the natural beauty of the beach. 

The beach is composed of an area where a private residential complex is located and another area open to the public. In the latter, private ranches are grouped together, many of them for rent; beach clubs, ramadas, and different types of lodging. There are also public areas for parking and access to the beach so that anyone can enjoy this paradise. ​ San Blas is an ideal place for surfing, as it has constant and good-quality waves all year round. It is also an excellent option for those looking to relax and enjoy nature.  The beach offers many attractions, such as its natural, clean, and safe environment. On the shore, you can observe different species of birds, and sightings of sea turtles that come to the coast to lay their eggs are common.

If you plan to spend the night, El Tunco has a variety of lodging options, from hostels like Roots, Papaya Surf Lodge, and EcoSurf, to more upscale options like Casa Miramar and Paradizo Azul that offer accommodations for everyone.  

For $15 an hour, learn the basics of surfing in one of the most outstanding destinations. Surfing tournaments are held locally and internationally. The best months for surfing are between April and August, when waves reach impressive heights of up to six meters. 

How to get there?

From San Salvador, take buses or choose to drive along the highway to Puerto de La Libertad, the trip takes about an hour. Follow the turnoff to El Malecón to kilometer 42, following the signs indicating the way.
